The E-Liza project aims to design, develop and test a microelectronic system based on the Ilizarov external fixator. The system is envisaged to allow the control and monitoring of the fixator parameters used on specific orthopaedic patients. Novel smart tension sensors to be placed on every pin of the Ilizarov apparatus and a ground force reaction sensor will be implemented. Data from these sensors will be transmitted through an embedded node to a back-end monitoring system, providing the possibility for optimal tensile adjustment under real-time distant medical supervision. Following the system integration appropriate trials will be performed to ensure accurate operation and clinical results will be obtained. Following the successful project completion, the introduction of a number of new e-heathcare products and services are foreseen, since there is no known competition in the field.
